Bruce Power has joined a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at helping the energy industry to build resilience against the effects of climate change.
The Climate READi™: Power (REsilience and ADaptation initiative) brings together industry leaders and stakeholders to take a collective and aligned approach to managing and adapting to climate risk to the power system. The initiative is being led by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and will build a standardized framework to inform infrastructure investment and deployment.
“Climate change means we’re seeing an increase in extreme events and preparing to meet electricity decarbonization goals and climate resilience needs will strengthen our ability to provide clean, reliable, resilient and affordable power for our province,” said Danielle LaCroix, Bruce Power Senior Director of Environment, Sustainability and Net Zero. “This initiative will allow the energy industry, scientific community, regulators, policymakers, and other industry stakeholders to take a comprehensive and consistent approach to assessing and mitigating physical climate risk and building adaptation strategies where necessary.”
The goals of the global Climate READi initiative is a collaborative approach to proactively analyze and apply climate data that will facilitate the effective planning, design and infrastructure investment, to enable the operation of resilient energy systems of the future.
This three-year project has three focused work-streams: Physical Climate and Data Guidance, Energy System and Asset Vulnerability Assessment and, Resilience/Adaptation Planning & Prioritization. The initiative will provide a consistent approach for power system stakeholders to apply climate-related information, including extreme weather and localized climate data trends and projections at the asset level, with guidance for specific asset/system vulnerability analyses, as well as guidance on applying cost-benefit analysis for managing climate risk, and identifying efficient and effective resilience investments.
“As the world’s weather extremes and climate are changing, so too must the energy sector’s approach to building a more resilient power system,” said EPRI President and CEO Arshad Mansoor. “I want to thank Bruce Power for joining Climate READi and supporting efforts to help proactively strengthen grid resilience. Potential climate and weather impacts, now and in the future, will require unprecedented collaboration among the energy sector and its stakeholders.”
Bruce Power is participating in this initiative with technical advisors supporting the project workstreams and will also be part of the Board Working Group that will provide strategic guidance on Climate READi objectives and results.
Bruce Power continues to advance its sustainability goals, including climate risk management, and received a strong Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Risk Rating in August. Bruce Power’s 2022 Sustainability Report provides clear, relevant disclosure of the company’s ESG commitments, with actions that drive tangible benefits in the near term.
