Bruce Power provided $20,000 to the Nature Conservancy of Canada to support the Baptist Harbour Alvar Project, a conservation initiative that will help protect ecologically important habitats on the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula.
The Baptist Harbour alvar property occupies 24 hectares near Tobermory and supports some of the rarest alvars in the world. These open and often harsh habitats have little to no soil and support at-risk species such as Hill’s thistle, dwarf lake iris and eastern Massasauga rattlesnake.
“Bruce Power remains dedicated to environmental conservation and restoration throughout our local communities and in the greater Ontario region,” said Lyndsay Reid, Bruce Power’s Director of Environment and Sustainability. “This conservation project will foster a sustainable ecosystem by preserving and supporting the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula’s important wildlife habitats and local biodiversity.”
Bruce Power’s contribution will assist the Nature Conservancy of Canada in protecting over a kilometre of Lake Huron shoreline, a wildlife corridor that allows larger animals such as black bear, deer and fisher (member of the weasel family) to roam freely.
“The Saugeen Bruce Peninsula is a very special place that supports extraordinary biodiversity, and the alvars, forests, and wetlands at Baptist Harbour Alvar are no exception,” said Esme Batten, Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Program Director of Midwestern Ontario. “While significant for nature, these forests and wetlands also clean our air and water to ensure people can continue to thrive.”
Since 2015, Bruce Power has provided a total of $240,000 to the Nature Conservancy of Canada to support land conservation and conservation planning efforts. Overall, Bruce Power has advanced land preservation efforts on approximately 150 acres of ecologically significant land by collaborating with additional groups such as the Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy, Bruce Trail Conservancy and Ontario Nature.
