Bruce Power is working with the Grey Bruce Health Unit, local businesses and a range of community groups to contribute to urgent needs within the community, support those in need during the holiday season and support Public Health efforts to combat the omicron variant.
“Since the onset of the pandemic, Bruce Power has worked with public health, government officials, local businesses and community organizations to provide support where it’s needed most,” said James Scongack, Chief Development Officer and Executive Vice President Operational Services, Bruce Power. “As we head into the holiday season and as we all face challenges associated with the omicron variant, Bruce Power will continue to do what it can to support safe and healthy communities in our region.”
Key actions to support urgent community needs include:
- Vaccination sites: Under the leadership of the Grey Bruce Health Unit, Bruce Power will be supporting the establishment of vaccination sites within the region to enable a large volume of boosters that will be required in the coming weeks. This will build off experience from the mass vaccination efforts with Hockey Hubs earlier this year. The company will also be offering the use of key facilities including Bruce Power and the extensive supply chain in the region.
- Personal Protect Equipment (PPE): PPE remains critical to protect people and the community in the spread against COVID-19. The company is immediately distributing thousands of packages of hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, masks, thermometers, and other personal protective equipment to community organizations and shelters across the region.
- Food bank support: Over $80,000 in grocery store gift cards were distributed across 38 food banks in Grey, Bruce, and Huron counties, and to local families through the Women’s Centre Grey Bruce, the Women’s House Serving Bruce and Grey, the Huron Women’s Shelter, and the Kabaeshiwim Respite Women’s Shelter at Saugeen First Nation.
- Holiday toy drive: A total donation of $45,000 was made to locally-run toy drives across Bruce, Grey and Huron counties. Bruce Power donated $15,000 and launched an online fundraiser in conjunction with the United Way of Bruce Grey which raised $30,000 from Bruce Power suppliers, employees, pensioners and the larger community who made contributions.
- Winter coat donation: To help keep community members warm during the winter months, hundreds of new winter coats, snow pants, hats and mitts, totaling over $10,000, were donated to the United Way of Bruce Grey winter coat program and the Huron-Perth Children’s Aid Society.
