Bruce Power marked International Childhood Cancer Day with a $60,000 donation to the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO).
International Childhood Cancer Day is a global collaborative campaign to raise awareness about childhood cancer and to express support for children and adolescents with cancer, as well as survivors and their families. POGO has been championing childhood cancer care since 1983, ensuring that all children with cancer in Ontario, their families, and survivors have equitable access to the best care for the best possible outcomes.
“We are inspired by Bruce Power for its ongoing commitment to championing childhood cancer care,” said Lynn Wilson, POGO’s Chief Development Officer. “The company’s stable funding over the years has helped provide financial assistance to families with a child in cancer treatment, supported survivors with customized school and work counselling when their disease or its treatment has left them with learning challenges, and funded promising research that examines the impact of childhood cancer and its treatment. Your support is critical to our success.”
Mike Rencheck, Bruce Power’s President and Chief Executive Officer, said it’s gratifying that the company is able to play a part in POGO’s great work.

Bruce Power and its employees are also proud of their role as a global supplier of medical isotopes, which are used in various forms of cancer treatment and the sterilization of medical equipment.
For decades, Bruce Power’s reactors have been producing cobalt-60, an isotope which helps to sterilize 40 per cent of the world’s medical devices, battle cancer and treat brain tumours. In 2022, Bruce Power expanded into the production of lutetium-177, an isotope used to treat neuroendocrine tumours and prostate cancer. This was made possible through the installation of an innovative Isotope Production System (IPS), which also has the capability of producing other cancer-fighting medical isotopes. The IPS was designed and manufactured by Isogen (a partnership between Kinectrics and Framatome), and is a first-of-its-kind solution to produce short-lived medical isotopes in a commercial power reactor.
In 2021, Bruce Power launched a merchandise website that celebrates the life-saving medical isotopes produced in its reactors with proceeds being shared between POGO and Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada.
