Bruce Power recognized by Forbes as one of Canada’s Best Employers for Diversity

Bruce Power has been recognized for the second year in a row as one of Canada’s Best Employers for Diversity as it continues to evolve its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programming and practices.

The company was presented the Canada’s Best Employers for Diversity 2023 award by Forbes following an independent survey from a vast sample of approximately 12,000 professionals from all industry sectors. The evaluation was based on four different criteria, including:

  • Direct Recommendations: Employees were asked to give their opinions on a series of statements regarding age, gender, ethnicity, disability, LGBTQIA+, and general diversity in their current workplace.
  • Indirect Recommendations: Participants were also given the chance to evaluate other employers in their respective industries that stand out either positively or negatively about diversity.
  • Diversity Among Top Executives/Board: Publicly available data based on the share of women who fill top executive or board positions.
  • Diversity Engagement Indicators: Publicly available diversity information (e.g. existence of a management position responsible for diversity, proactive communication of diverse company culture, published annual CSR and/or Diversity Report) were taken into account.

“This recognition lets us know that although we recognize we still have work to do, we’re on the right track with our diversity, equity and inclusion programming and it’s important that the independent feedback comes from the people who work here and our peers,” said Karen Smith, Bruce Power Vice-President and Chief Human Resources Officer. “We’re working to provide a workplace that is safe and welcoming to everyone, regardless of our differences.”

Bruce Power has made a public commitment to promote the value of diversity and inclusion in their organizations as a signatory of the Leadership Accord on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the electricity industry. The accord provides a platform to create a culture of equality and inclusion, while facilitating opportunities for underrepresented groups and to support women into traditionally male-dominated roles. In 2022, 32 per cent of hires into non-traditional roles (Trades, Maintenance, Engineering, and Operations) were women.

The company has focused on increasing Indigenous employment and creating economic opportunities within the communities.  The company supported the hiring of over 50 Indigenous Peoples, either directly into the organization or through placements with vendors and trades working with the organization.

In 2022, Bruce Power supported the launch of two new employee resource groups – the Women’s Forum and the Gender & Sexuality Alliance. These groups focus on advocating for awareness, acceptance, and visibility on site and in our communities to increase diversity, inclusivity, equity, and equality. The company continues to support various community initiatives and events through Grey-Bruce Pride, Nuclear Against Racism, and the BlackNorth Initiative to name a few.

Although the company has had a longstanding focus and commitment on diversity, equity and inclusion, in March 2023, the company issued its formal Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Policy to ensure our employees, vendors, site visitors, and communities can clearly understand our expectations and actions.
