Bruce Power awards 23 Early Childhood Education Scholarships

In a response to the growing need for qualified childcare workers in Bruce County, Bruce Power is pleased to provide 23 Early Childhood Education students with scholarships for the 2024 academic year. The scholarships aim to help ease the growing demand for childcare professionals and support the development of future early childhood educators.

“Childcare remains a significant barrier for many families in our local communities,” said Karen Smith, Bruce Power’s Vice-President and Chief Human Resources Officer. “Through our ECE scholarships, we’re empowering the next generation of educators, and we are hopeful that this initiative will make a lasting impact in addressing this ongoing challenge. Congratulations to all of the 2024 scholarship recipients!”

The students selected were chosen from six colleges throughout Ontario — Canadore, Conestoga, Durham, Fanshawe, Georgian and Humber — reflecting a diverse pool of talent and potential. By providing financial assistance to students pursuing ECE certifications, the program hopes to build a strong, more sustainable workforce in the early childhood education sector to help alleviate some of the challenges families face in securing childcare locally.

“Thank you to Bruce Power for acknowledging the vital importance early childhood education plays in fostering a better future,” said Fatma Boshia, one of this year’s scholarship recipients. “This opportunity helped facilitate my efforts to enhance accessibility and equity in early childhood education for local families.”

In addition to the ECE scholarship program, Bruce Power has also partnered with Build a Dream to conduct an environmental scan, which included discussions with Bruce County childcare organizations, employee focus groups and an internal survey. The scan revealed a shortage of qualified staff, particularly Registered Early Childhood Educators (RECEs), as a key barrier to full operation. Together, these efforts demonstrate Bruce Power’s dedication to creating a supportive environment for families and fostering a diverse workforce. This marks the second year for Bruce Power’s ECE scholarship program, which recognized 13 students in 2023. Details for the 2025 program, including application information and eligibility criteria, will be released early next year.
