Bruce Power has over 4,000 employees who have a wide range of backgrounds, education and experience inside and outside the nuclear industry.
Whether your experience lies in maintenance, operations, engineering, finance, human resources, information technology, construction or emergency response, Bruce Power most likely has a career for you, with many opportunities for professional development and advancement throughout the organization.
Below are the stories of just a few of our employees.
Jamie Shewfelt – High school co-op student, Mechanical Maintenance
Jamie, a local high school student, saw several potential co-op placements before settling in with the Bruce A Fix It Now mechanical team. From the start, Jamie accompanied crew members to view and assist on different work orders and repairs in the station.
As a future University of Waterloo student, Jamie was looking for hands-on work experience in the mechanical field before beginning his studies in mechanical engineering.
“The Fix It Now crew gets along very well and teaches me to be passionate about my work,” Jamie said. “They do their best to help me understand the functions of different machinery.”
Although the days are long and the tasks ever-changing, Jamie said he enjoys working at Bruce Power and hopes to one day procure his own career on site.
Eva Ulak – Position: Cost and Schedule Analyst
Eva joined Bruce Power on contract in 2007 as a Financial Analyst. However, it didn’t take long for her to realize the benefits that Bruce Power had to offer before she joined permanently in 2009.
After completing her Bachelor of Commerce with Honours in International Specialization from Guadalajara, Mexico, and completing her MBA at Wilfrid Laurier University in 2002, Eva worked in the financial industry for years before calling Bruce Power her home. When Eva was ready for a career change, choosing Bruce Power was a natural fit for her.
“The company offers an excellent environment and allows you to have a first-class work and family life balance,” she said.
After a long day at the office, Eva knows the best place to relax is the beach. “Location is another big plus to Bruce Power, it’s great to be able to enjoy a summer afternoon at the beach.”
Nathan Stam – Authorized Nuclear Operator, Bruce A
In the control room, Nathan works at the heart of one of Bruce Power’s nuclear station. Although, he didn’t start his career here, he managed to work his way to the top. Like most other Authorized Nuclear Operators (ANO), he started off as a Nuclear Operator in Training in 2003. Nathan worked as a Field Operator for five years before accepting a position in the ANO program in January 2007.
Through years of ongoing training with a complexity of systems to learn, and job shadowing other qualified Authorized Operators, Nathan became certified by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission in 2009 as a licensed Operator. Nathan holds an Electronic Engineering diploma from RCC College of Technology in Concorde.
Tracy Primeau – Shift Manager, Bruce A
Tracy Primeau currently works as a Shift Manager at Bruce A. Tracy is in charge of leading a group of 50 employees (mostly nuclear operators) during work shifts and approving work maintenance, engineering and procedural changes. She is also responsible for all aspects of safety – from reactor to public safety.
Since entering the industry in 1990, Tracy has held the positions of Operator in Training, Field Operator, Supervising Operator and Authorized Nuclear Operator. Tracy’s most rewarding project to date has been mentoring young men and women who are interested in becoming Authorized Nuclear Operators and Control Room Shift Supervisors.
Tracy enjoys working at Bruce Power for a variety of reasons. “I learn something new every day and I love the people I work with,” she said.
Tracy holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Waterloo. She received certification as an Authorized Nuclear Operator in 2005, Control Room Shift Supervisor in 2009 and as Shift Manager in 2010.
Gordon Yoon – Senior Technical Engineer/Officer
Gordon is always up for a good challenge; and with a career as a Senior Technical Engineer he sees new ones every day. Working specifically as a Design Engineer, Gordon is responsible for maintaining the design basis of the stations and providing design support for modifications to process systems.
Since joining Bruce Power in 2001, Gordon has held various roles within the Engineering department, all of which require great attention to detail and a sound technical understanding. Gordon’s most rewarding project in his career thus far has been his work on the Environment Qualification (EQ) Project. Gordon helped to successfully adapt and maintain the EQ requirement to operate the stations safely.
Gordon holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Incheon University in Korea.
